Op maandag 14 oktober organiseert het Nederlands Instituut voor Meerpartijen Democratie (NIMD) een boekpresentatie van Thomas Carothers over zijn nieuwste boek: Development Aid Confronts Politics – The Almost Revolution
Thomas Carothers en zijn co-auteur Diane de Gramont komen naar Den Haag om hun nieuwe boek te presenteren over de confrontatie tussen ontwikkelingssamenwerking en politiek. Jean Bossuyt van het European Centre for Development Policy Management in Maastricht geeft zijn beoordeling op het boek gevolgd door een discussie met het publiek.

Thomas Carothers is vice president van de Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, waar hij voorzitter is van het door hem opgerichte Democracy and Rule of Law programma. Hij is een autoriteit op het gebied van democratie en bestuur.

Boekbeschrijving van Development Aid Confronts Politics – The Almost Revolution
A new lens on development is changing the world of international aid. The overdue recognition that development in all sectors is an inherently political process is driving aid providers to try to learn how to think and act politically. Major donors are pursuing explicitly political goals alongside their traditional socioeconomic aims and introducing more politically informed methods throughout their work. Yet these changes face an array of external and internal obstacles, from heightened sensitivity on the part of many aid-receiving governments about foreign political interventionism to inflexible aid delivery mechanisms and entrenched technocratic preferences within many aid organizations. This path breaking book assesses the progress and pitfalls of the attempted politics revolution in development aid and charts a constructive way forward.
