The battle against sexual violence during war

This year the 3FM Serious Request radio programme, in collaboration with the Netherlands Red Cross, is calling attention to the plight of women and girls who become victims of sexual violence in conflict regions. This silent disaster affects millions of women and has serious consequences for the physical and psychological health of victims. Sexual violence is a war crime treated as a taboo and shrouded in shame.

On the eve of the ‘Glazen Huis’ campaign, Humanity House is teaming up with the Netherlands Red Cross to organise an in-depth programme on the theme of the 3FM Serious Request. What exactly is sexual violence? What does Humanitarian Law state? And how is the Red Cross tackling this silent disaster? Two speakers discuss their personal experience in combating sexual violence in conflict regions and the difficulties encountered in daily practice. During the evening you can of course donate money to 3FM Serious Request.

About the speakers

Coline Rapneau (Sexual Violence Advisor, Direction of Operations/Women and War Sector of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Merlijn Stoffels (press officer of the Netherlands Red Cross). The discussion is chaired by Kamran Ullah

Serious Songs for the Glazen Huis
In the Glazen Huis (Dutch for ‘glass house’), three DJs generate as much publicity as possible for the victims of sexual violence and collect money for the cause. Humanity House is showing solidarity with the DJs and organising a free music event on Thursday 18 December: Serious Songs.
