Truth Booth: the truth about Afghanistan

2014 is an important year for Afghanistan. On April 5th general elections will be held and by the end of the year practically all foreign troops will leave the country. Since 9/11, we have often heard from generals, aid-workers, politicians, journalists and other experts what they think about Afghanistan. But what does the average Afghan have to say?

Truth Booth is an inflatable mini-studio in the shape of a speech bubble  that  toured Afghanistan last summer. Anyone could enter and record a video message by finishing the sentence: ”The truth is …” This allowed us to hear what truly matters to Afghan men, women and children. They participated with great enthusiasm to have their say about: security, the economy and the presidential elections -of course-. But also on plenty of other issues: their hopes and dreams about the future and …. the latest songs, cell phone rates and the sting of a scorpion to mention a few.

About the speakers

During the evening a selection of video clips from the Truth Booth will be shown, portraying disarming, surprising and sometimes very direct statements and we discuss with our guests: former commander of the armed forces Dick Berlijn, Afghan-Canadian writer Hamida Ghafour (The Sleeping Buddha) and journalist Antoinette de Jong, journalist Bette Dam and many young Afghan Dutch will comment on- and converse  about what is said in the short clips. Moderator of the night is Harm Ede Botje.
