The city was besieged from October 2012 until April 2018, suffering widespread destruction and the displacement of more than half its pre-conflict population. An estimated 125,000 people currently reside in the area, compared with some 300,000 before the war began, and many families live in one or two rooms of their partially destroyed homes. With basic goods and services still scarce, UNHCR is providing assistance including mattresses, shelter repair kits and legal assistance to obtain civil documents lost or destroyed in the fighting. But residents' needs still far outstrip the available resources.
