How can you portray the stories of people in crisis? American documentary photographer Nina Berman offers new photographic approaches to documenting refugees and stories of trauma. From the Za’atari camp for Syrian refugees in northern Jordan (Za’atari: Inside these Walls‘) to the trail of human trafficking in the USA (‘Evidence‘).

After a short lecture on her work, Nina will engage with the audience in an conversation on the (im)possibilities to portray stories of people in crisis.

About the Speaker

Nina Berman (USA, 1960) is a documentary photographer, writer, educator and author. Her work is exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, collected in private and public collections and featured in major art shows. It has been recognized with awards from a.o. the New York Foundation for the Arts, the World Press Photo Foundation, The Open Society Institute Documentary Fund and Hasselblad. Berman is based in New York and Associate Professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Nina Berman is a member of Noor, photo agency based in Amsterdam.
