Level 3 Emergency is the highest emergency-level used by the United Nations. Iraq, Syria and Yemen are L3. In October Congo made this sad ‘promotion’ to L3. The alarm bells are ringing loud and clear: the entire aid system needs to scale up for Congo.
What causes the deteriorating situation? What regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are affected? What are the effects on neighbouring regions? What role do local actors play? And what can be done by humanitarian actors?
‘Red alert on Congo’ will give the latest update on the situation in Congo. Researchers just back from the country will share their insights, and humanitarian professionals will show how they deal with this emergency situation. Together with the audience we will discuss possible actions and priorities. Furthermore new in-depth analyses will be shared. What is the perception of aid workers by rebels (irregular combatants) in Kivu? Or what are push and pull factors for child soldiers in East Congo?
