#HearMeToo

How to educate, activate, accelerate?

Having rights and laws enacted to eliminate violence against women and girls needs to go hand in hand with people being informed about their rights and obligations. This HagueTalks is about tapping into women and girls empowerment to decreasing violence. Education being the key to inform people and, in turn, helps to activate and accelerate change.

During this HagueTalks you will hear personal and inspiring stories from people working in the field of peace education. Join the dialogue with your experiences and lessons learned.

About the speakers

  • Elena Incisa di Camerana will share her experiences in Honduras and how photography helped to decrease gang violence.
  • Makgatho Motshekga will explain the importance of cultural sensitivity in education for local communities in South Africa and finding their way to justice.
  • Hoang Thi Huong will talk about working with youth groups to promote gender equality and women’s human rights, universal values in Vietnam. Her programmes have focused on capacity building to change discourses of gender norms and breaking out of gender stereotypes through social campaigns and social media.
  • Kesia-Onam Apkene Yawo Togoh tells the story of how a young girl challenged and overcame disempowering traditional beliefs and cultural practices that discriminated against the rights of children in the community. Through peace education, this bold girl is stimulating new thinking and paving the way for new beginnings in her community.

  • Moderator is Arthur van Buitenen. He is an advocate for sustainable development built on rule of law and human rights. Focused on food security & rule of law, he is also an experienced moderator of dialogues. A #SharedValues approach is at the heart of his moderation.

About this HagueTalks

This HagueTalks is part of #HearMeToo: end violence against girls and women. This worldwide campaign starts on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, until 10 December, Human Rights Day. All around the world events are organized with local, national, regional and global women’s movements, survivor advocates and women human rights defenders, to create opportunities for dialogue between activists, policy-makers and the public.

This HagueTalks is organized in cooperation with the Humanity House, International Development Law Organization (IDLO), Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO) and Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC).
